Why we started

“Can’t you save any of it?” she asked, tears brimming to her eyes. “No”, I said, “I’m sorry, but the hard drive is unreadable. I’ll try to get you another hard dr…”

She was already sobbing, stumbling out my office door. She only made it to the hallway, where she slumped into a ball, tears streaming down her cheeks as she reached for her phone, calling the only person who could console her… I assume it was her mother. Six years of saved papers, photos, and memories down the drain in a preventable loss.

I wish I could tell you that this was an unusual story, but in my years as system administrator, I dealt with data loss on a daily basis. Between virus attacks, dropped laptops, hard drive failures, and the occasional random combustion, I’ve seen about every way data can be lost, and it was never pretty.

Of course, the first question I always asked was… “Do you have a backup?” Most people don’t have a good backup plan, come to find out. Most people mean to backup, or have one from awhile back, or have burned CDs, but data is missing, jump drives are too small to hold it all, and CDs have a shelf life of about 10 years before they’re unreadable.

Online backup has become popular the last few years. Mozy and Carbonite lead the way. In fact, I used to heavily recommend Mozy, back when they were cheap and unlimited.  If you’ve looked at them recently, however, you’ll see that prices for their basic service are over $65 a year, limited to 1 computer, and limited to 50GB of data, which is nowhere near enough to backup a modern PC, who come with 500GB+ hard drives by default these days.

The point is… the information we care about these days (videos, documents, images) is all DIGITAL. It didn’t used to be that way, even 10 years ago, but when almost all camcorders and cameras sold are digital, keeping your data safe is more important than ever. And with the average life of hard drives at about 5 years, you would just not believe the number of people who lose huge chunks of data.

So that’s why we’ve founded Boundless Cloud. We sell UNLIMITED backup accounts. You install a small program on all your computers, tell it what folders you want it to automatically back up, and it seamlessly works in the background monitoring and backing up your files. And, should anything happen to your hard drive or files, you can easily pull your information back down from the cloud. It’s very simple and easy to use.

LiveDrive.com is who we’ve partnered with. They sell an amazing product. It gives even more bells and whistles than Carbonite/Mozy, like great mobile support. If you have an iPad or iPhone, you can stream your movies or music and keep your collection with you everywhere. And I’ve used them for over 3 years and I have over 8,100 gigabytes stored in my account, so believe me when I say it is unlimited space.

If you’re interested, we’re offering a limited-time offer on accounts. Backup all your computers for $30 a year (Yes, that is per-account, not per-computer). You won’t find a better deal and you won’t find better support from me and my co-founder, Justin Singleton. To sign up at that price, head to boundlesscloud.com and when you’ve looked around, click the “signup” tab and your account will be auto-generated in seconds via a Paypal checkout.

Need more info? Just ask. We respond to every email. We care about backing up YOUR digital world.
